Drake’s OVO Sound signee PARTYNEXTDOOR, dark R&B’s newest ne plus ultra, just released four new tracks, (“Girl From Oakland”, “Don’t Worry”, “Juss Know”, “Let’s Get Married”)–all components to his mini-mixtape, PND Colors, an ongoing project that’s been sporadically released via singles.
The delirious “Let’s Get Married”, a tongue-in-cheek offer wrapped in Braithwaite’s drear-dipped idealism (“What I need…can only be royal if you loyal, girl/ And all I need is a woman who will wanna agree with everything that I do…”, almost sounds like a legit proposal, packed with drowned-out 808s and skittering synths. And like his mixtapes from the past two years, the material PND Colors has a romantic weakness lurking in its dark exterior; PARTYOMO certainly doesn’t ask you to channel his own somber seclusion…(“Girl you’re the reason you’re lonely tonight/ But this is the season to get back your life…”). He’d rather just be love’s jaded poster boy and wish her the best.
And then there’s the darker, jagged half of PND…his embittered moments of stingy self-absorption and fame-minded priority. One is set on a heavy-banger instrumental (“Don’t Worry”), the other a Travi$ Scott collaboration, “Juss Know”. The Houston-based production guru and PND combine forces to deliver a post-breakup retrospect over layered, chopped-up vocals and alien-like whirrs.
